The best app to quit vaping depends on what you need from it. To pay nothing, start with a free government app: My QuitBuddy in Australia, or quitSTART in the US. For a plan that steps your nicotine down week by week, help in the minute a craving hits and friends in on it, ExHale: Quit Vaping Coach puts all three in one app built around vaping. Below, nine quit apps and programmes compared from each store page as we read it on 5 Nov 2026, with the best pick for each kind of quitter.

The best pick for each need#

    • Best for a guided step-down plan: ExHale: Quit Vaping Coach, a quiz-built plan that steps your nicotine down week by week, one-tap puff logging, craving battles and a craving SOS, a quit crew of friends, and Vape Sense (BETA) on Apple Watch, all in one app built around vaping.
    • Best free app in Australia: My QuitBuddy, the Australian Government's free app for getting smoke-free and vape-free.
    • Best free app in the US: quitSTART, Smokefree.gov's free app, built for quitting smoking.
    • Best for free breathing tools: Vape Quit Coach, breathing and grounding tools that work offline without a subscription.
    • Best for a daily puff limit: Quit Vaping: Puff Zero, Reduce or Quit modes with a daily limit that changes with your plan.
    • Best for logging nicotine strength: Puff Count: Quit Vaping Now, puff logs with nicotine strength in mg, and daily limits.
    • Best if you also use nicotine pouches: QuitNic: Quit Zyn & Smoking, built for pouches, vaping, cigarettes, snus, dip and chew.
    • Best if you smoke as well as vape: Kwit, a smoking-first plan with a vaping section and nicotine replacement tracking.
    • Best for cigarettes only: Smoke Free - Quit Smoking Now, smoke-free days, money saved and cravings, for people quitting cigarettes.

    How we compared them#

We read each app's own App Store or Google Play page, and the official pages for the two government programmes, on 5 Nov 2026. We judged them on what matters most when you quit vaping: whether the app is built for vaping, whether it gives you a plan that steps down, what it does in the moment a craving hits, whether friends can be part of it, and which devices it runs on. Prices are as each store showed them that day, and they change and vary by country.

ExHale is our app: we're ExHale Labs, the team that builds it and writes these guides. Every fact about every app, ours included, comes from its store page, linked in the references, so you can check it. The picks are by need, not a ranking. LastPuff isn't in the list because its App Store page returned an error when we checked.

    What ExHale does differently#

Most quit apps stop at a counter. ExHale starts with a short quiz and turns your answers into a step-down plan: one calibration week to measure where you are, then weekly step-downs that adapt to what you actually log, with milestones, a vape-free counter and a road back if you slip. A slip is something you log, not a reason to start over.

It's built for the minute a craving hits. Fight it in a quick turn-based battle with Reddington, your pixel quit buddy, or open craving SOS for box breathing, 4-7-8 breathing and quick minigames. Every craving you beat makes Reddington stronger, and you name him, dress him and watch him grow while you cut down.

It brings your friends in. Your quit crew joins with an invite link, and before a puff you can ask up to three of them, who answer Go ahead, Hold on 10 or Breathe with me. Of the apps we compared, it's also the only one that suggests vape sessions for you: Vape Sense (BETA) on Apple Watch notices sessions from your wrist motion and asks before it logs anything.

Add one-tap logging, Stats and Health trends, the money you save, daily quests, weekly leagues and chat with Reddington (18+) for a plan for tough moments, and it runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android. The yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial on the App Store and Google Play.

The alternatives, and what each does best#

    Quit-vaping apps

    • Puff Count: Quit Vaping Now. It logs each puff and its nicotine strength in mg, with daily limits, a custom quit plan and a quit-with-friends option.3 Worth knowing: iPhone only on its store page, with several paid plans listed, so check what the free version covers.
    • Quit Vaping: Puff Zero. You choose Reduce or Quit, set a goal date, and get a daily limit that changes with your plan. One tap logs a puff, and Puffy, the AI coach, is there for cravings.4 Worth knowing: iPhone only, rated 18+, with weekly, monthly and yearly Premium plans listed.
    • QuitNic: Quit Zyn & Smoking. It's built for nicotine in general, not vaping alone. A morning pledge, an evening check-in and streak freezes for missed days make up the daily routine.5 Worth knowing: iPhone only, with weekly and annual Premium plans listed.
    • Vape Quit Coach. Its breathing and grounding tools work offline and need no subscription, according to the store page. It also has a journal and time-since-last-vape tracking.6 Worth knowing: the AI coaching is optional and paid.

Smoking apps that also cover vaping

    • Kwit. It's built for quitting smoking, with a vaping section and nicotine replacement tracking. Its store text talks about gradually reducing your dependence on vaping devices and e-cigarettes with personalized guidance.7 Worth knowing: smoking comes first, and the advanced features sit behind a Premium subscription.
    • Smoke Free - Quit Smoking Now. It tracks smoke-free days, money saved and cravings for cigarettes.8 Worth knowing: its store text is written for cigarettes, so it's the pick if that's what you're quitting.

    Free government programmes

    • My QuitBuddy. The Australian Government app for getting, and staying, smoke-free and vape-free. It has tips and distractions for cravings and tracking to chart your progress.9 Healthdirect lists it as free, for adults, and free to download from the Apple Store or Google Play.10 Worth knowing: it's an Australian service, so the support around it is Australian.
    • quitSTART. Made by Smokefree.gov, a resource of the US National Cancer Institute. It gives tailored tips, games and challenges for cravings, and badges for smoke-free milestones.11,12,13 Worth knowing: it's written for quitting smoking.

Which app is right for you#

    • You want a plan, craving help and friends in one app. ExHale has the step-down plan, the craving tools, the quit crew and Vape Sense (BETA) in one place.
    • You want to pay nothing. My QuitBuddy is the free pick in Australia and covers vaping. quitSTART is free in the US but built for smoking. On iPhone, Vape Quit Coach's breathing tools are free.
    • You want a taper plan. ExHale builds the step-down from your quiz answers and adjusts it to what you log. Puff Zero and Puff Count both offer daily limits. To see how a taper works first, read how to taper off vaping with a step-down plan.
    • You want automatic tracking. ExHale's Vape Sense (BETA) on Apple Watch suggests sessions and asks before it logs. The guide to tracking vape puffs covers every way to count.
    • You use pouches or cigarettes too. QuitNic covers pouches. Kwit and Smoke Free put cigarettes first, and ExHale has a plan made for smokers as well.

What the research says about quit apps#

Research on quit apps is still early. A 2019 Cochrane review of phone-based programmes for quitting smoking found moderate-certainty evidence that automated text-message programmes raised quit rates over minimal support.14 For smartphone apps it found only five trials, with 3,079 people between them, and rated that evidence very low certainty: too little to say yet whether apps raise quit rates on their own.14 The review is about smoking, and none of its app trials tested an app built for vaping.

The part with good evidence is regular, structured support, the kind automated text programmes deliver. We built ExHale around the same idea: a plan, reminders that fit your day and a crew that shows up, not only a screen you remember to open. An app is one part of a quit, and our practical guide to quitting vaping covers the rest, from picking a quit date to getting support from a quitline or pharmacist.

    Questions about quit vaping apps#

What is the best app to quit vaping?

It depends on what you need. For a free app, My QuitBuddy is the pick in Australia and quitSTART in the US. For a guided step-down plan, ExHale: Quit Vaping Coach, on iPhone, Apple Watch and Android, builds the plan from a short quiz, logs puffs and cravings in one tap, gives you craving battles and a craving SOS with breathing exercises for the moment an urge hits, lets you ask your quit crew before a puff, and offers Vape Sense (BETA) on Apple Watch. ExHale is made by ExHale Labs, who publish this guide.

Are there free apps to quit vaping?

Yes. My QuitBuddy, from the Australian Government, is free and covers smoking and vaping. quitSTART, from Smokefree.gov in the US, is free and built for quitting smoking. Vape Quit Coach's breathing and grounding tools are free on iPhone. ExHale has a 7-day free trial on its yearly plan, so you can try the full step-down plan, craving tools and quit crew before you pay.

    Do quit vaping apps work?

Research on quit apps is still early. A 2019 Cochrane review found moderate-certainty evidence that automated text-message programmes raised quit rates for smoking, but only five app trials, too few to say yet whether apps raise quit rates on their own. None tested an app built for vaping. The part with good evidence is regular, structured support, which is the idea ExHale is built around: a plan, daily logging, reminders and a crew of friends.

Can a quit vaping app count my puffs automatically?

ExHale can. Its Vape Sense (BETA) feature on Apple Watch looks for the hand-to-mouth motion of vaping and suggests sessions, then asks you before anything is logged, so your count stays yours. Of the apps we compared, ExHale is the only one that suggests vape sessions for you. The others rely on you logging each puff or session yourself.

Which free government quit app should I use?

It depends on where you live. My QuitBuddy is an Australian Government app for getting and staying smoke-free and vape-free. quitSTART comes from Smokefree.gov, a resource of the US National Cancer Institute, and is aimed at people quitting smoking. Both are free to download.
